The International Council of Nurses, or ICN, is an international organization that supports the profession of nursing. The organization is governed by the Council of National Representatives (CNR). The CNR selects the board of directors and sets the dues for member associations. The ICN president is elected by CNR members for a four-year term. Vice presidents are elected from among board members. The highest vote-getter is chosen as First Vice President, the second highest is elected as Second Vice President, and the third highest vote-getter is elected Third VP. Each officer serves closely with the president, and each has a specific job.
The nurses in the ICN are specially trained to provide 24 hour care for premature or sick newborns. In addition, the nurses are the first people a family will meet. They will explain the care plan and teach parents how to care for their newborn at home. The charge nurse manager oversees the daily events in the ICN, and she is supported by a team of administrative nurses. This group of nurses works closely with the ICN’s physician and medical staff.
The ICN has been actively involved in developing and testing the International Nursing Minimum Data Set (IMIA-NI) for healthcare practitioners. Both organizations have worked together on the International Nursing Minimum Data Set, which will eventually lead to an ISO standard for nursing terminology. The ICN and IMIA-NI are partners in several projects. One of these initiatives is developing a reference terminology model for nursing concepts. ICN members are collaborating on other projects as well, such as an ICN-NI partnership to test an International Nursing Minimum Data Set.
The ICN has a bank of clinical experts that provides reviews and recommendations on terms and definitions. The bank comprises more than 80 nursing practice experts from over 30 countries. Since the programme was established, the bank of clinical experts has reviewed over 100 terms and definitions. They are responsible for making sure that the terminology is consistent across the board. The ICN’s aim is to provide a standard for nursing terms and definitions.
ICN has been a strong voice for the profession of nursing internationally. ICN member associations have expanded the ICN programme and its coverage. They also provide local representation for the ICNP(r) Programme. These initiatives have also contributed to strengthening nursing and health at the international level. With a global voice, the ICN is the best way to improve nursing. You can read more about the benefits of becoming an ICN member at www.org.
The International Council of Nurses is an organization of national nurses in more than 130 countries. It was founded in 1905 and is made up of members of more than 130 nursing associations. Currently, it represents the voice of nurses around the world. In addition to representing the nurses, ICN also promotes the development of new technologies. And, what is more important, is that it is the organization itself. This federation is one of the largest groups of nurses in the world.
